Photo Editing – Yay or Nay?

Uncategorized

Remember, not everything is a picture. A good eye can edit before the shutter opens. — Craig Coverdale

The conversation has come up again!

First I would like to apologize for my lack of work lately. I’ve been terribly uninspired and just couldn’t find anything to speak about.

Photo Editing – Yay or Nay?

“In a photography group I’m a member of, someone posted an opinion.

This person first makes it clear that they are a beginner. Then this person goes on to say that photo editing is not for them and looses the idea of what a photograph is, changing it to digital art”.

It’s not a word for word quote and I tried to get the essence of what this person is saying. You know all the bad Press lately of editing and the mistakes that has come to light.

Now the answers to this person were very calm and the posters actually tried to explain the necessity of why Photo Editing is used.

Granted I can understand this person’s idea of not wanting to corrupt the original photograph. If we also include the purists of shooting and getting it right in camera, it then looks like editing is made out to be a crutch or savior!

Now let’s get something out of the way to clear the air. Digital Artist’s are an amazing group of highly talented and creative people. There are several areas on the Net that showcase this kind of Art. They happen to use similar tools as us for their vision.

I’m speaking about Photography and Photo Editing, not including transplanting one’s head on another’s body.

Let’s talk about what happens when we depress the shutter as we attempt to capture an image. I’ll try to keep it simple to avoid this from becoming a text book.

When the shutter opens the Sensor is exposed to the light in the scene.

The light sensitive areas on the sensor are triggered and this information goes to the onboard computer to be analyzed and categorized in its algorithm. Landscape, Portrait and so on. If you have the adjustments in the menu’s set for any specific altering areas on the image they are probably added here. Clarity, Contrast, Focusing and any other enhancements you might decide.

These adjustments are made and were created by some Lab Tech in a white coat in a programming room making decisions on what they think your Art should look like. Look it’s not all bad and good for the majority of those who don’t care. Others like me want complete control and don’t appreciate someone half a world away making artistic decisions on my “Vision’s”!

Your image is then put through an algorithm if it’s for a JPG image.

Repeating information from the image like the areas in a Sky of blue or included white clouds. These bits of information are then removed from the image, then the image is compressed into its JPG state and saved onto the Memory Card. As much as 83% – 85% of the details of your image can be discarded in this process.

This is one of the many reasons some of us shoot in the Raw Format.

I refuse to let a complete stranger let alone a computer programmer make creative decisions on my Art. Also it’s my image and those pixels give me the ability to work the image as my creative mind sees fit.

Throwing out my details? Nope!

Running my images in your Algorithms for identification and Categories? Nope!

Oh wait what did I just describe going on here? A simple form of adjustments to your image. Guess What people, these are in the simplest terms called photo editing. Automated yes but still Photo Editing.

So the Purists who say they don’t edit there images? Those images are already edited!

The Raw Image can Not be uploaded onto the Net for viewing. They must be converted into a JPG image before hand so we the viewer can look at them. Guess what? That conversion is also Photo Editing.

So now we have a basic image saved in the Raw Format. Flat, lifeless and now needs to be edited to bring this image to life that we first saw when we depressed the shutter.

To just add, None of the Menu Creative adjustments on the images work or affect the Raw Image. No information is deleted or discarded. This is why the Raw file is soo much larger than the jpg image file.

The built in meter can be fooled by lighting and shadows. The sensor has a limitation in the very bright light areas and can loose details. This is what we call “Blown Out”. We compensate for this by adjusting the exposure to prevent loss of details in these blown out areas. We’ve all seen these images shared on the Net. Background perfectly exposed but the main subject is either too dark or too light! Or the opposite happens. The main subject is perfectly exposed and the background or foreground is exposed wrong by either too dark or too light. Photo Editing can possibly help.

What about poor lighting or even a mistake by the Sensor for overall color balance or contrast? Maybe the White Balance in the image needs to be corrected. How do we do this? Photo Editing of course.

Photo Editing tools give us a way of both correcting and or enhancing our images. Do we have to do this? Of course not. The tools and techniques are there at our disposal. Is this wrong? That depends on how they are used. Lately in the News there has been a number of situations where “Oh No! That image was retouched”! How dare they! LOL

An Artist who works in either oil or some other medium that needs to be applied to a canvas, parchment or paper has several methods available. They have brushes, many different kinds. They have knives or blades that can apply the medium by its edges. Strokes of the Artist’s hands or fingers given different techniques get different results. Charcoal, Pen and Ink, Color Pencils and so on. All have different tools and methods available to make the results look the way the Artist envisioned in the minds eye.

These are Tools that can be used when needed at the Artists disposal.

What would happen if you inform an Artist that they can no longer use some of these tools? At first it sounds like a good exercise to further one’s ability. Look at any painting! Do you ask what was used to acquire a certain look in a certain part of the painting?

Hmmmm OK let’s take this a bit further. In the days before Digital we had to develop the film first. Then when we get the film back from the darkroom we take these to be printed. Where you might ask? Back in the Darkroom.

You see creating an image in Photography was always a multiple part process. We shoot the film, then develop the negatives, and then finally printing these images by manipulating the light to enhance the final product.

Today we still have a darkroom but now it’s on our Computers. The Digital Darkroom.

Have a Great Weekend

…the very question of whether photography is or is not an art is essentially a misleading one. Although photography generates works that can be called art – it requires subjectivity, it can lie, it gives aesthetic pleasure — photography is not, to begin with, an art form at all. Like language, it is a medium in which works of art (among other things) are made. Out of language, one can make scientific discourse, bureaucratic memoranda, love letters, grocery lists, and Balzac’s Paris. Out of photography, one can make passport pictures, weather photographs, pornographic pictures, X-rays, wedding pictures, and Atget’s Paris.
Susan Sontag

Walking around looking for something to shoot. What goes through your mind? Do you pre-plan ahead of time? Thinking today I will shoot flowers? Maybe your in a different mood? Or do you walk around looking for anything that catches your eye?

Even if I’m in the mood to shoot something specific I’ll “always” keep an open mind to be on the lookout for that one moment of creativity. Be aware of your surroundings. The ever changing of angles and light can create interesting shapes. Just something that catches your eye.

A person walking down the street passing a shop window. Or just to capture a mood or interesting light. A few years ago one funny comment that was from one of my “Strolling through the Park” series. A person who I didn’t know enquired about one of my images. Asking if I knew the person in my picture? I replied I had no clue. He then asked me “Why would you take a picture of someone you don’t know”?

Funny, at first I didn’t know how to answer that. Seconds passed before I started laughing and answered “Art”! Can you see details in this persons face to recognize him? No. Does it look like this person was aware I was pointing my camera at him? No again.

Keep in mind the image in question happened years before the Rules Changed for “Street Photography”. Each Village, Town, City and actually Countries have passed rules governing what we can and cannot do on the Public Streets. Before you venture out it is “Your Responsibility” to know the Laws that restrict what and how you can Photograph people minding their own business while using public streets.

By sight and observation and thought, with the help of the camera, and the addition of the date of the year, we can hold fast the history of the world. – Julia Margaret Cameron

First we lost another from our childhood yesterday. All those who sat in front of the TV set and watched F Troop. We lost James Hampton who played Hannibal Dobbs. https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0358996/

April 5th Monday we received our Second Covid Vaccination. Next day was when I started to feel the Side Effects. Monday nights sleep was terrible, waking up every 2 hours. Couldn’t get comfortable. After all we’ve heard it was pretty light really from what some of my friends have complained about.

Loss of appetite, yup. Felt feverish, yup. Chills never happened but I did feel cold! Best way to describe the next feeling is wobbly. It felt like my balance was slightly off and weak. This is truthfully the one symptom that is still with me. That and my “Normal” Sleep pattern is off. Having to lie down twice a day is not normal for me. But having to pee every 2 hours is making me feel like a water fountain! That I think has gotten better?

Now Johnson & Johnson Covid Vax has been pulled over in Europe. I just read an article that several people had adverse reactions and had to be hospitalized. Meanwhile here in the States several Governors are trying to open up their States and ignore about all Covid Precautions! Awe people are tired of being forced to care for others! Listen Up people! This Virus should be thought of as a Plague! The real enemy! It doesn’t tire! It doesn’t rest! It doesn’t sleep! It sits and waits for Us to drop our guard! This Virus is not going away anytime soon!

The Government’s should act accordingly and set a better example instead of letting the world self destruct! The pettiness of self involvement is disturbing!

As Photographers it is our responsibility to document what’s going on. People refusing to wear masks in stores then complain when called out!

When Society Fails the people! When Governments Attack its own citizens using Military Force because they want control! You think it can’t happen? It’s happening this very minute in Myanmar.

Military Coupe In Myanmar

What can we do? That is the real problem here. People won’t want to believe anything that threatens the comfort of everyday life! People are refusing to wear masks and arguing that it takes away there freedom. In the United States advisors were telling the past President that he had every right to use the Military to overthrow the last election. Read the article above that I linked to for Myanmar. Sounds exactly like the same thing.

It starts small when local governments forget those that society has failed and tries to pass blame on any excuse. Especially in these trying times of the current Global Pandemic. In the United States we have Voter Suppression laws being passed in Georgia and now Texas is making a play for the same thing.

What about Veterans? Does the local government support Veterans and the care they might need? How as Photographers can we be safe and still show what is really happening? I am truly not sure if this gentleman is a veteran.

What about the elderly?

We show our images that maybe someone somewhere gets information to an organization that can do better! When I was growing up we had “Life Magazine” that did exactly what needed to be done. They are sorry to say gone at this point. The Only Tool at our disposal is of course the Internet! Try searching for Life Magazine to see the impact that they made.

Just did a fast search for Life Magazine and one of the many hits was this. This is truly an inspiration. https://www.life.com/life-picture-collection/

Have I made you think?

Have a great weekend everyone and thanks for reading.

JEAN PIAGET

What we see changes what we know. What we know changes what we see. – Jean Piaget

The inspiration for creativity! What makes the human spirit have the need to do something to make the inner thought last so others can “See”? Physical, tangible enough to transfer that idea so others can “Understand”?

What is that idea? The thought that manifested itself enough to create the need for expression? To then have that skill to be able to come to reality? If we know history the story goes a young man was lurking in the quarry and questioned about a block of marble. He was informed that the piece in question was imperfect and damaged therefore not useable. They gave it to him as long as he could get it out on his own. This was told to us by a museum guide and contradicts the story I just read on the Net.

The quote I heard was he had to release the shape that was calling to him. That it was already there and all he had to do was get rid of everything else around it. In his mind he envisioned what was underneath. Not bad for a 26 year old! FYI I had shot the above image and upon searching on the Net there is an image that is very close to mine. It actually scared me that my image was being used without my permission. The trim on the wall in the background is of a slightly different angle.

Florence, Italy is itself an Inspiration to the inner voice. The angle of the Sun creates a mood that is like no other.

In the darkroom, the most unique thing I do is selective masking, a technique I have refined over the years. – Alan Ross – in B&W Magazine.

This past week was Alan Ross’s Birthday! Out of all the talented people I’ve spoken to, Alan is one of the most interesting and knowledgeable in our world of Photography.

I’m going to copy a quote from his page:

Alan Ross is a renowned photographer whose unique vision combines traditional photographic methods with today’s technology.

He worked side-by-side with Ansel Adams as his photographic assistant, and was personally selected by Ansel to print his Yosemite Special Edition negatives.

Alan is a sought-after teacher who inspires professionals and amateurs to prepare their minds for the moment when light, beauty and chance, define opportunity.

Here is the link to his page: alanrossphotography.com

As a student of photography I’ve studied the works and history of several of those that have come before us. Mr Adams name has an everlasting effect for everything we do, especially in the hunt for knowledge and better quality. On top of his obsession for better quality Mr Adams always had an open mind to play with new equipment that became available.

Mr Ross has the unique experience of being part of Mr Adams world and his insight of influence and inspiration.

I highly recommend that you dear reader perform your own research into both Mr Ross and Mr Adams. Mr Ross is still inspiring and encouraging those who are new to the art of photography.

I am sharing an image that I had created a few years back during an adventure in Ireland. Once I came upon this scene before me, my mind instantly thought of everything I’ve read from the Inspiration of both of these Gentlemen.

Have a Great Weekend!

Limitations

To convey in the print the feeling you experienced when you exposed your film – to walk out of the darkroom and say: “This is it, the equivalent of what I saw and felt!”. That’s what it’s all about. – John Sexton

The expectation of capturing a scene exactly the way our creative eye envisioned it using the technology of modern day is hopeful at best. As much as our equipment has progressed it still lacks the abilities of our human heart and eyes.

Physically our human eyes have a much wider range of contrast controls between the brightest and darkest areas of a scene. This is why even the best exposure only captures the majority of a scene and sometimes other parts of that same scene fall outside the range of what is considered a proper exposure.

This is exactly why capturing a “Straight Out of Camera” or “SOOC” is soo difficult. Notice I said difficult Not Impossible!

There are specific Special Interest Groups for people who join together to further the ideas of Artistic Purity. All we have to do is pay attention really. The images are way above and beyond magnificent! To belong to one of the Special Interests Groups we have to learn about the Rules and the limitations they set on what the Final Image has to fulfill as requirements.

The Limitations can be both Camera Work and Editing. Capturing the perfect proper exposure is always the attempted goal as far as experience dictates. Some Special Interests Groups Do Not Allow Editing at all. See this confuses me and I can’t get my head around this one Concept.

My perspective comes from Old School Stuff and the Wet Darkroom. Stay with me here for a moment. I normally shoot in “Raw Format” which means none of the image manipulation apps in the cameras menus will influence my images. I manually edit the images later and that includes Contrast and Sharpness.

If we shoot in JPG Format the Cameras Menu Image Controls affect the images! Saturation, Sharpness and Contrast are the first things that come to mind. These are Now Saved as our Images. So to me in my mind those Images are already manipulated by the Camera and contaminated so how can they be considered “SOOC”?

This is one of the several reasons I shoot in Raw. I want complete control of my images and refuse to let the Cameras boxed limited variable understanding of the creative world influences my work. Or to explain more simply some person in a Lab Suit sitting in a Dust Controlled Environment Dictating what my work should look like. The picture modes on that dial are the perfect example. Cloudy, Sunny, Landscape, Portrait or Night. Think about it, Are All the images you’ve ever seen look exactly like one of the above categories? Of course Not.

So back to the Specialty Groups. Basic Understanding of the Rules are No Editing in your images to keep them pure! Can someone please explain this to me? This makes absolutely no sense! If my camera places contrast control adjustments on my images because it’s shot in JPG how is this then allowed?

Also how is B&W Allowed Unless a Camera is specifically converted to Shoot Only B&W which is extremely expensive by the way. I shoot in Raw then first convert the image to B&W?

Why do we do this to ourselves? Phew for the betterment and furthering the creative process. To help us become better in our chosen direction. I remember when I first purchased my very first lens all those years ago. I was having trouble getting used to the perspective that this New Lens brought to the table. By perspective I’m not just talking about angles of view which was very different. Distance to subject now has to be considered as well. Also the exposure numbers just changed, I’m used to a f3.5 and this new lens can go much faster. OK you think that’s funny huh? How far down does your Aperture go? f11 or f16? I still have an old lens that closed down to f32

So how do we change our personal perspective on some new equipment? We set limitations inside our head to Force Us to See! Put that New Lens on that Camera and go out and use it for a week, 2 weeks maybe more. Do Not Change Your Lens. Force yourself to use this One Lens so you can Develop your Creative Eye to Really See through this new piece of equipment.

Have a Great Weekend everyone!

Mr. Kertesz was known for his drive and enthusiasm. At 90, he produced a portfolio of new pictures and showed it to the photographer Susan May Tell. When she asked him what it was that kept him working, he replied, “I am still hungry.” – Andre Kertesz – This was included in the obituary of Kertesz written by John Durniak, NY Times, 30, September 85.

EUGENE DELACROIX

[1798 – 1863] was the most important of the French Romantic painters

As far as I am concerned, I can only say how much I regret such an admirable discovery should have come so late! The possibility of studying such images would have had an influence on me that I can only guess at from the usefulness which they have now, even in the little time left me for more intensive study. It is the tangible proof of nature’s own design, which we otherwise see only very feebly. – Eugene Delacroix quoted in “French Primitive Photography”, Philadelphia 1969[cited in “From today painting is dead – The Beginnings of Photography” (catalogue of exhibition in The Victoria & Albert Museum 16 March – 14 May 1972 p. 48), caption to item no. 532 showing photographs of nude models taken from an album belonging to Delacroix. The models are said to be in poses arranged by Delacroix.]

Can’t decide? I tried playing with this image and no matter what I do. I’m Not satisfied with this! Original on Top. Cropped, added contrast and Clarity to the bottom image.
