For this Memorial Day Weekend I’m tying both of my sites together.
This is for the Technical Side.
I just wrote and posted about “Gardens and Flowers”!
Yeah a Cell Phone can do. But you need to start to learn about “Depth of Field”!
There is a setting on your Camera App to change the Aperture.
This change will control the amount of Light going to your Sensor.
But this will also change and have an impact on where you Focus On the Flower. I’m stretching here but think of the Numbers on a Ruler!
Now if you also see the numbers for your Aperture right?
But think of those numbers as a Fraction of an inch.
I must State for Clarity that what I’m trying to explain is Only Concept.
The actual measurements and numbers Are In Fact Different.
I’m just trying to get you to understand that the Higher Numbers Like 5.6, 8, 11 and 16 if you understand the concept of what a Fraction of an Inch Is?
Then the higher the number lets say 11 is smaller than 4 because its a Fraction of an inch. So 16 is now smaller than 8?? Get it now?
So these Numbers are Used for your Aperture whether it be on any Camera.
To specify we call this Aperture. Which in reality controls the Size of the Opening that Lets Light In! To designate this we use the lower case “f” followed by a colon.
So If I’m speaking about the Aperture number 4 I would say “f:4”
Now again I want you to understand that these Numbers are Not the exact Size of the Opening. It’s a designation that is a common reference when discussing Aperture. It makes it easier for us to get our heads around and I will leave that discussion at that.
Getting back to the Aperture.
Now that you understand the comparison. The higher number lets less Light In.
The Smaller Numbers let More Light In. Got that?
Now lets take this one step further.
The Higher the Number the More that will be in Focus. We call this the Focus Plane. You see Not Everything will be in Focus nor should it. Depth of Field is another way to describe this area of What Is In Focus.
Shooting Flowers we Don’t want to see what’s in the background.
We just Focus on the Stems and Petals right? So we need a Shallow Depth of Focus.
So in getting Closer to Our Flower we need to be conscious of what is and what is
Not In Focus to give us a Better Image.
Now that I explained this. I want to just inform you that this is part of what is proper
Exposure. There are several things that Affect Exposure. The Aperture which I just explained. But the Shutter is also Involved. Think of the Shutter as a small Door that
Opens and Closes. This also controls Light. It controls the Amount of any given Light
Entering in and going to the Sensor.
The Next Thing that controls the Light is called “ISO”. Which has come to be a Standard of Sensitivity for the Sensor.
NO! I am Not going to get involved in that discussion here.
But I will Recommend the Book. This Book is the Bible for those that are interested in
Learning how to Understand what and How Exposure works. This Does Include Any Kind of Camera. The Title of the Book is Called:
“Understanding Exposure” by Bryan Peterson.
Bryan explains it a Lot better than I can. It’s Available on Amazon.
So now that we’ve come this far in understand about Depth of Field.
Here is the Link to my Images!
Like Always. Please let me know what you think of my Posts.

Have a Great Memorial Day Weekend.
