“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime.”
— Mark Twain

To photograph is to hold one’s breath, when all faculties converge to capture fleeting reality. It’s at that precise moment that mastering an image becomes a great physical and intellectual joy.
— Henri Cartier-Bresson
– From the book: “The Mind’s Eye: Writings on Photography and Photographers by Henri Cartier-Bresson

Normally as you all know I will share a quote from a famous Photographer every week. This week I am in a major funk and have a bad case of Cabin Fever.
Due to situations beyond our control we can’t travel. Yet!! My father in law has been having some health issues and until he is well and home. We will not even be able to consider traveling. The issues from his health hopefully will be resolved soon.

Lately some of my photography friends have been posting some wonderful images of there (their?) exploits. Which of course is making me turn to my archives and searching for images that I’ve not had the pleasure of working on. Till now……….. LOL

 Friday Night Photography Quote:
Ultimately, my hope is to amaze myself. The anticipation of discovering new possibilities becomes my greatest joy.

Vision

What do You See? Don’t Just Look! Use your Imagination!
Look at everything around you. Watch Everything!

Those rushing around you might walk right past something that you can possibly see framed matted and being put on a Wall.

Light and Shadows, Contrast of the Light, Bright Light or Low Light, Soft Colors!

Do you know the Terms:
Golden Hour? Blue Hour?
Certain times of the day lend to better quality and more interesting Light.

I just did a fast search and came up with an interesting article at Petapixel:

Besides Learning how to use your Camera. You must now be aware of your surroundings. Once you learn all of the discussions we have had on my pages about learning how to use your camera to create “Art” it’s Now Time for you to practice.

  • Practice knowing how and what needs to be changed on your camera while walking around.
  • Learn How to Change the Settings while trying Not to Look at Your Camera!
  • What are your Current Settings on your Camera?
    Don’t Look?
  • What is the Slowest Shutter Speed you can Hand Hold without Using a Tripod?
  • What Is: Back Button Focus?
  • What is: OCF?

Once you Learn How to Use your Camera this is where the real Interesting part of Photography comes into play! Using your Cell Phone as a Camera is a technique that you can use to further your Vision. There are some Wonderful Images captured by Cell Phones all over the Net.

I’m Not Speaking About Cell Phones Here!

Go to a Park! Go to your Local Zoo! Go to your Local Museum! A P&S or a DSLR is a big difference over a cell phone.
Watch whats going on around you. Besides the Interesting things you will see. Look at those people around you. Shooting People in a Public Space you must have to be careful. I’m Not Speaking About Laws! I’m speaking about Common Sense! You don’t want to come off as a stalker. Your intentions as an Artist could be seen as an intrusion!

Being aware of your surroundings at all times gives up opportunities that is beyond words! Here is a shot I had taken sitting outside of a Museum while waiting to enter. This adorable little girl was fascinated by the fountain. This example was shot using a Panasonic P&S.

Little girl was enthralled by the fountain.

Little girl was enthralled by the fountain.

You don’t have to go far. The most beautiful things are right under your nose. Go to the Beach! Especially in the Off Season.

Now if I see something and waiting for just the right moment. My camera is double checked and I’m now waiting patiently. I’m Also looking around me so I know exactly what’s going on!

One time while on vacation with my wife. We were walking after dinner to check out the local area. This was a fast rest stop between destinations. There was a Mare and a Foal hanging out in a pasture. Immediately I knew I would be back at Sunrise the following morning.

Now here’s the thing! Always watch for the unexpected.
I’m out there in the chill of the morning waiting for the sun to come up. I can barely make out the Mare and Foal in the distance in the shadows of the trees. I’m right up against the fence so as to help me to steady my camera. It’s a bit colder than I expected and my hands are shaking…
I’m waiting!
I have a time limit. I have to go back to the Hotel and wake up my wife so we could be on our way.
I’m waiting.
Now the Sun is starting to peak out. The Mare and the Foal are staying in the shadows.
I’m Waiting!
There’s a slight cloud cover that hopefully will give me some good details and drama when the horses move!
I’m keeping an eye on things around me. Rolling hills that I can see just the roof of a house in the distance. Bring my camera to my eyes to check it out. Nah! Nothing. Look back at the horses. Still in the Shadows! Not coming Out!
Still Waiting!
Look to my right and Holy Molly! We got ourselves the start of a rainbow. Rainbows are extremely difficult to shoot. Now I’m watching the Rainbow to see how the colors are forming. I’m also watching the Horses and they are still in the Shadows. Now I’m really getting excited. I’m trying to stay calm.
Rainbow is almost prime colors. Looks beautiful. Bring my camera to my eyes and I’m using the fence on the field as a lead in line. Nah not good. Looking down the grass is wet with the morning dew. I have no choice I need to change my angle. Down on one Leg I go taking a Glance at those stupid Horses that are still in the trees.
Compose my shot using the Fence as Leading Lines and Line the Fence and the Rainbow Up. My Heart is now pounding knowing this is one powerful Image. Check my settings again for the millionth time. Depress the shutter and Wonderful Shot! Take a few more as a just in case. Now I’m getting up to brush my pants off and glance at the those Horses! Now they are coming out into the mourning Sun. Thank You! Finally! Glance at my watch and I have to wake my wife up in about 5 minutes…. Got it! After all that it’s only OK. Not great but I’m satisfied.

I say thank you to the Horses and turn to run because I’m now late!!  Like always but she’s asleep and won’t know a minute here or there! I’m now very proud of myself for being at the right time and the right place!

For the record I was using a Nikon D700 and attached was a Nikon 70-300 VR Lens. Here are the two images I came away with that wonderful beautiful morning!
